В ходе деградации белков накапливается аминный азот, который в отличие от углерода не пригоден для получения энергии за счёт окисления. Поэтому те аминогруппы, которые не могут быть повторно использованы для биосинтеза, превращаются в мочевину (см. Цикл мочевины) и выводятся из организма.
