Аэробные клетки получают энергию в виде молекулярного кислорода. В то же время из O2 постоянно возникают в небольших количествах токсичные вещества, так называемые активные формы кислорода [АФК (ROS от англ. reactive oxygen species)]. Эти соединения являются сильными окислителями или крайне реакционноспособными свободными радикалами (см. Химические реакции), которые разрушают клеточные структуры и функциональные молекулы. Особенно подвержены АФК-повреждению эритроциты, для которых из-за их транспортной функции характерна высокая концентрация кислорода.
