Нерастворимыми элементами крови являются эритроциты, лейкоциты и тромбоциты. Ввиду особой важности эритроцитов их биохимические характеристики рассмотрены более подробно: Гемоглобин, Транспорт газов, Эритроциты: обмен веществ.

К лейкоцитам принадлежат различные формы гранулоцитов, моноцитов и лимфоцитов (см. Иммунный ответ). Эти клетки различаются между собой размерами, функцией и местом образования.

Тромбоциты являются клеточными фрагментами больших клеток-предшественников мегакариоцитов костного мозга. Главная функция тромбоцитов — участие в коагуляции крови.
