Две молекулы дауномицина (окрашены в красный цвет) встраиваются в двойную спираль ДНК (окрашена в синий цвет). Кольцевая система антибиотика встраивается между парами оснований G/C (внизу), в то время как углеводная часть занимает малую бороздку ДНК. Это приводит к локальному изменению структуры ДНК, что влечёт за собой ингибирование репликации и транскрипции.
