Наиболее важными мембранами в животных клетках являются плазматическая мембрана, внутренняя и внешняя ядерные мембраны, мембраны эндоплазматического ретикулума и аппарата Гольджи, внутренние и внешние митохондриальные мембраны. Лизосомы, пероксисомы, различные везикулы также отделены от цитоплазмы мембранами. Клетки растений содержат дополнительно мембраны хлоропластов, лейкопластов и вакуолей. Все мембраны полярны, то есть существует различие в составах внутреннего и внешнего по отношению к цитоплазме слоев.
