В дыхательной цепи электроны переносятся от НАДН или убихинола (QH2) на O2. Выделяющаяся энергия используется для создания протонного градиента на внутренней митохондриальной мембране (см. Дыхательная цепь). Синтез АТФ сопряжён с обратным потоком протонов из межмембранного пространства в матрикс.
