Изомеры, образующиеся за счёт свободного вращения вокруг простых связей, носят название конформеров. Небольшие молекулы могут принимать в растворе множество конформаций. В представленных конформерах янтарная кислота имеет такое же расположение атомов, как в фумаровой или малеиновой кислотах. Возможно существование обеих форм, причём конформация 1 из-за сильного отталкивания двух COOH-групп является предпочтительной и поэтому встречается чаще. Макромолекулы, такие, как белки и нуклеиновые кислоты, имеют вполне определённые конформации, стабилизированные благодаря внутримолекулярным взаимодействиям (см. Свёртывание белков).
