Вирусы — это паразитические нуклеопротеидные комплексы. Наиболее простые вирусы имеют в своём составе только одну молекулу нуклеиновой кислоты (ДНК или РНК, никогда вместе) и оболочку из молекул белка. В вирусах не идут процессы обмена веществ, они размножаются только в клетке-хозяине. Поэтому их не относят к живым организмам. Вирусы, которые при своём размножении повреждают клетку-хозяина, являются возбудителями заболеваний и считаются патогенными. К заболеваниям вирусной этиологии относятся синдром приобретённого иммунодефицита (СПИД), бешенство, полиомиелит, корь, краснуха, оспа, гепатит, грипп и другие инфекции верхних дыхательных путей (простуды).
