Из стандартных потенциалов E°′ (см. Окислительно-восстановительные процессы) наиболее важных окислительно-восстановительных систем световых реакций следует, что для переноса электронов от H2O на НАДФ+ необходимы два процесса возбуждения. После возбуждения в ФС II E°′ возрастает примерно от −1 В до положительных величин для пластоцианине, то есть энергия электронов должна повышаться в ФС I ещё раз. Если НАДФ+ недоступен, фотосинтетический электронный транспорт все же можно использовать для синтеза АТФ. При циклическом фотофосфорилировании электроны возвращаются от ферредоксина (Fd) через пластохинонный пул на b/f-комплекс. Эта разновидность электронного транспорта не приводит к образованию НАДФН, а формирует протонный градиент и тем самым обеспечивает синтез АТФ.
