Эндоплазматический ретикулум [ЭР (ER)] — протяжённая замкнутая мембранная структура, построенная из сообщающихся трубкообразных полостей и мешочков, называемых цистернами. В области ядра ЭР сообщается с внешней ядерной мембраной. Между шероховатым и гладким ЭР имеется морфологическое различие: мембраны шероховатого ЭР усеяны множеством рибосом, в то время как гладкий ЭР не имеет связанных рибосом.
