Для лечения тех или иных заболеваний необходимы белки, например белковые гормоны, которые у животных присутствуют в малых количествах и поэтому труднодоступны. В настоящее время такие белки можно получать в больших количествах при помощи сверхэкспрессии в бактериальных или эукариотических клетках. Для этого необходимо выделить соответствующий ген из ДНК человека и клонировать его в составе плазмиды. Кроме этого гена плазмида должна содержать последовательность ДНК, которая делает возможной репликацию и транскрипцию плазмидной ДНК в клетке-хозяине. Как только подходящие клетки трансформированы плазмидой и произойдёт репликация, транскрипция гена инициируется путём индукции. Трансляция образовавшейся мРНК в клетке-хозяине позволяет производить необходимый белок в достаточном количестве.
